HR STORM, the stormwater education program of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC), is a coalition of local government staff members who come together to share ideas and pool resources for targeted educational program efforts about stormwater management. Some of the most recent educational efforts have been on proper disposal methods for auto maintenance products and household chemicals, proper pet waste management, and maintenance on best management practices. STORMWATER NEWS

MEDICATION DISPOSAL - Flushing  is not the answer
Improper disposal of prescription or over-the-counter drugs adds chemicals to the water supply and/or soil. Though the concentration of these chemicals in surface waters is extremely low, the presence of these substances in the environment is emerging as an important issue. As with any household hazardous waste product, you should not flush these items down the toilet, down the sink, or place in recycling. CLICK HERE TO LEARN HOW TO DISPOSE OF MEDICATIONS>>

JAMES CITY COUNTY - More rebates added
Concerned about your water use this summer? James City Service Authority (JCSA) is offering a series of rebates to help. Receive rebates for rain sensors, rain barrels and cisterns, EnergyStar dishwashers and washing machines, WaterSense high-efficiency toilets, ‘on demand’ hot water recirculation systems, and WaterSmart landscaping. By conserving municipal water, you can save money, ensure water availability for emergencies like firefighting, reduce stormwater runoff to protect our waterways, and promote a conscientious culture of wise water use and conservation. You must be a JCSA water customer to apply. For more information, visit www.bewatersmart.org and click on “Rebates,” e-mail bewatersmart@james-city.va.us or call 253-6859.

CLEANER STREETS - CLEANER WATER: Norfolk to Sweep Streets Once a Month
When it rains, debris and chemicals from our streets wash into stormdrains and flow directly into area waterways. Street sweeping removes trash and leaves from roadways that could clog stormdrains and harm waterways. The City of Norfolk is doubling its street sweeping schedule to capture more debris. To learn more about Norfolk's street sweeping program, visit the City of Norfolk, Public Works Department for maps, FAQs, and updates.
